i legit feel bad for austria, especially sorry for the goalie sicher. and i was angry at the austrian coaching staff for not pulling their starting goaltender and letting him hang out there til the end. a very poor prospect mismanagement. did they ever think about what this would do to the psyche of a teenager(yes they're all human beings before athletes)? how do they motivate a young man after this?
it was hard to see any benefits of sending them to halifax in order to "compete." i'm pretty sure they saw it coming, but getting scored on endlessly in (probably) 4 straight preliminary round games can never be what you'd expect of. after the second period, i wished there was a "mercy rule" of sorts in the iihf. like hell there was. it was a very much one sided game, which is completely pointless and detrimental to both sides; the winner gets a false sense of their own capabilities while the loser just gets their spirit broken.

my friend bet me before the game that czechia would score more goals than austria had shots and i lost. shots were 38-8 in favour of the czechs and they beat the austrians 9-0. austria had 8 sog, and the crowd was literally cheering every time austrian shot at the net. even if austria could be shooting 100% today, they would be still losing.
for austrians, the very thought of a win is unthinkable, their realistic goal this competition at this point in time would be to score a goal. just one goal. even outshooting their opponent's goal total seems pretty challenging for them right now, not really sure if there's any value to playing games like this.

czech goaltender tomáš suchánek currently has 3 points at the world juniors that are more than team austria has scored so far and all the austrian players' points combined. and yeah, the czechs sure are very pleased to have a point per game goalie with them.

i was starting to wonder how austria even made it into the tournament. nothing against austria, but they're that bad, not qualified bad, shouldn't be there bad, it's just sad to see them humiliated every match, every period, every minute. and i've come to realize there is no russia.
so the only reason austria is competing in the wjc this year is because basically russia was kicked out from all international sports. it's no different to the hockey world, the iihf has banned russia (and belarus) indefinitely from hosting or participating in any hockey events that results in austria taking russia's spot i suppose? who knows what if austria team played with the teams that are on a similar level? intstead, they have to take a drubbing like today rather than potentially win the division one championship.
while i support that decision, it's an undeniable fact that the tournament is not the same without the russians. it's just bad for the young russian hockey players nonetheless as the world junior championship is once in a lifetime opportunity and experience young players never forget.
but at the end of the day, this is all a world political matter, you only blame your president. 🤷‍♀️ or maybe not.
